Riley's Gym Kyoto, named by Roy Wood in April 2007, is run by The Snake Pit certified coach, Osamu Matsunami. He learned catch-as-catch-can from Roy Wood in Wigan for a total of two and a half years from 1993 to 2003. He also trained under Billy Robinson at UWF Snake Pit Japan in Tokyo more than two years.
At Riley's Gym Kyoto, we practise based on the teachings of Billy Riley who had encyclopedic knowledge of catch wrestling. He taught various techniques of throws, takedowns, positions, submissions etc.,
which were proven to be effective and has produced some of the most skillful wrestlers such as Roy Wood, Billy Robinson, Karl Istaz (Gotch), and Bob Robinson (a.k.a. Billy Joyce).
Billy Riley's philosopy of improving your wrestling skills was repetition. He would tell all his great students “Do it again” until they could perform the technique properly as a reflex action.
His teaching inspired his students to learn how to learn.
Riley's Gym Kyoto is dedicated in preserving “pure”Lancashire catch-as-catch-can wrestling.
